Vault 116 is a Vault-Tec Vault located by the Narragansett Bay, near Providence, Rhode Island. The Vault's original population primarily consisted of members of the Civil Engineer Corps and associates of the Naval War College.
Background[]
Vault 116 was designed with the specific intent to rebuild civilian infrastructure in the impending wasteland, such as roadways, telecommunications and living accommodations, in contrast to Vault ███. In addition to members of the CEC, specialists from Vault-Tec, RobCo Industries and General Atomics International (and collections of knowledge the respective fields) to facilitate more specialized repairs as well as many Construction drones, Construction Protectrons, and experimental Assaultron Domesticator units. To ensure the Vault's success, Vault 116 was planned to close as soon as a sufficient number of CEC members could return from the reconstruction efforts in newly liberated Alaska with the Vault 116 sealing in late July 2077 following the arrival of the 500th and final planned occupant.
Due to the mundane nature of the Vault 116 experiment, life in Vault 116 was unremarkable. The only abnormalities were the increased amount of patriotic and propagandistic materials across the Vault and the education system's heavy focus on STEM subjects, with civil and electrical engineering being paramount. The few infrastructural complications that occurred amounted to little more than training exercises for the technically minded vault dwellers, with reports of intentional tampering just so a second party could fix the issue.
In late 2277, the correct governmental codes were broadcast via radio into Vault 116, announcing the presence of the Enclave. Upon opening, Overseer David Hoffmann met with the leader of the Enclave detachment, General Samuel Genovese, to discuss the future of the two groups. The General gave an abridged but comprehensive overview of the last two centuries, of course focusing on the Enclave's many glories and the wasteland's evils. The conversation ended with the declaration that the two groups would "rebuild America, its lands, its people, and its righteousness", which roused the citizens of Vault 116 into an even larger fervour to rebuild and repair than they already were.
Using data gathered by the Enclave, the newly inducted Field Engineer Regiments, commonly called Fixits by enclave personnel, executed one of the many Rapid Deployment Operations they had devised since the closing of the Vault. Being escorted by Enclave Soldiers and retrained Vault Security officers, the Fixits began to spread across Providence clearing roadways, inspecting and condemning buildings connecting power lines across the city to their Vault's super-reactor. Due to their large numbers and single-minded work ethic, the Fixits were able to quarden off an area using Jersey Barriers and rubble bastions, quickly establishing a Vertibird landing area atop a parkade.
