You're crazy to go out west, kid. If the frostbite don't get ya', the animals will. And if the animals don't, if you actually get to Anvil City; the people will.— Anonymous caravan guard in New Anchorage

Anvil City is a minor settlement in the western Yukon Wasteland as of 2220.

Background[]

Little is known about the history of Anvil City, even among the local residents. According to some of the settlement's few surviving books, it was founded as a gold mining camp in the early 1900s before developing into a town of its own. Despite this, it did not experience much growth between the mid-1900s and 2077. Some of the settlement's ghoul residents claim that Anvil City may have been known as Nome at some point before the Great War, although no confirmation of this has been found.

When the Great War occurred, most of the bombs had been concentrated on Juneau and Fairbanks. Anvil City itself was left relatively unscathed by the nuclear blasts. Despite this, many of the inhabitants were ill-prepared when food shipments to the community stopped. While living in one of the harshest areas in Alaska had tempered them for the environment, many residents died of starvation in the years following armageddon.

Post-War[]

After the Great War, some of Alaska's Iñupiat people migrated and joined the fabric of Anvil City. They taught the survivors of Anvil City how to better survive off of the land, and for many years the citizens of the community did not mind the new arrivals. Like them the Iñupiat were just trying to survive in the post-War world. Unfortunately, by the 2190s discrimination began to arise. A man by the name of Nathan Valentine began to stir up hatred toward the Iñupiat, blaming them for the increasing attacks on what few caravans came to Anvil City.

In 2201 a gang of raiders known as the Ice Hounds attacked the settlement. The group had just finished licking their wounds after their defeat in Fairbanks and thought the divided Anvil City would be easy prey. The town's mayor issued a state of emergency. Instead of squabbling, the once-divided people took up arms and fought side-by-side to defend their home. For ten weeks Anvil City courageously defended itself, albeit with heavy losses. The Ice Hounds would finally retreat from Anvil City when their munitions had nearly run out from the long conflict. In the aftermath of the battle it was discovered that Nathan Valentine had been secretly working with the Ice Hounds. The enraged community stripped the man naked and locked him in a makeshift stockade until he succumbed to the elements. The stockades have been since been renamed the "Valentine Suite", and this method of execution is now the ultimate punishment for only the most heinous crimes commit in Anvil City.

Rebuilding[]

In 2202 the rebuilding of Nome began. The settlement had been heavily damaged by the raiders and many were forced to construct makeshift shacks to replace their homes. As of 2220, Anvil City has slowly began to rebuilt. Following the defeat of the Ice Hounds, the Iditarod Sled Dog Supply was established in the settlement and has become known for selling the best sled dogs in the Yukon Wasteland.

The people of Anvil City are still as tough as nails, occasionally having to fend off animal attacks (including a claim of one from a large ape man) and raider gangs.

Notes[]

  • Anvil City is based on the real-world town of Nome, Alaska.
  • The name Anvil City is believed to have been proposed to replace that of Nome early in its history, although no such change ever occurred.
