The Yukon Wasteland is what remains of post-War Alaska and the Canadian Yukon.
Description[]
Decades before the Great War of 2077, much of Alaska was still very natural and peaceful. However, with most of the world's oil being destroyed during the Middle-Eastern War between the European Commonwealth and the United Arab Coalition during the 2050's, the United States needed more Oil. The once peaceful frozen expanses became littered with oil derricks and refineries as America tried to squeeze whatever black gold they could from the Alaskan soil.
During the late 2050s and early 2060s the United States began contracting oil companies such as Poseidon Energy to start drilling for more oil in the wilderness of Alaska. "Oil Industrial Zones" began to sprout once peaceful river valleys had been, pipelines zig-zagging across Alaska, into Canada, and down into the former state of Washington. Cities such as Anchorage, Juneau, and Fairbanks, which had popped up during the early years of oil drilling; began to grow as more money poured into them from government subsidized oil companies.
In 2066, China invaded the Alaskan city of Anchorage, causing a drain on oil production in the country. The Sino-American War had begun, and would continue even as oil companies continued drilling for more oil. Many battles were fought in the forests and mountains of Alaska, army and air force bases on both sides began to litter the mountain sides, and military equipment littered the soil as the two opposing forces fought for some of the last resources on Earth.
Then, on October 23, 2077, the Great War occurred. As bombs began to drop around the world, the wide and sparsely populated Alaska were somewhat saved from the nuclear holocaust. They were not saved from the radiation of Alaska's military and industrial assets being the target of nuclear strikes. Years after the fallout settled, the animals of Alaska began to mutated.
After the Great War[]
Many of Alaska's sparsely populated towns managed to survive the Great War. Despite this initial respite, luck turned to misfortune as their remote locations caused starvation after the collapse of shipping. Riots and anarchy ruled Alaska for many years, many of the settlements that formed or survived saw little choice but to turn to less than savory means of survival. Slavery and cannibalism were adopted by survivors out of what they saw as a necessity to live.
Wildlife[]
Many newcomers to the Yukon Wasteland notice that there are still pines and pure water in certain places around the Yukon Wasteland. However, many places near pre-War military and industrial sites still have high pockets of radiation as well as polluted water. Most of the trees near nuclear sites have been blown out, but many strong pines have managed to stay upright and alive for many years.
Mutated versions of pre-War Alaskan wildlife cause many problems for the average wastelander. Packs of feral dogs and wolves roam the snowy wastes, hunting for caribou, moose, and humans. The most unlucky of wastelanders may find themselves confronted with mutated mutated bears radiation morphing them to be larger and stronger. The result could give a Deathclaw a reasonable challenge.
Deathclaws experimented on before the War have made their home near the city of Juneau. They are generally more hairy than the Deathclaws of California, but still just as dangerous. Even the legendary Sasquatch is rumored to stalk travelers in the Yukon Wasteland, though some in Ounalashka claim it to be an escaped Soviet military experiment.
Cities and Towns[]
- Juneau: Former capital of the long dead Alaska, now a major trading outpost
- New Anchorage: The scavenging capital of the Yukon Wasteland
- Fairbanks: A war-torn city in the central Yukon Wasteland
- Anvil City: A trading post in the western Yukon Wasteland
- Ounalashka: Largest settlement of the Red Sons
- Raydarr Island: Island base of the Yeiltooch Pirates
- Whitehorse: The largest surviving community of pre-War Canada's Yukon Territory
- Lake LeBarge: A small settlement north of Whitehorse
Factions[]
Raiders[]
Raiders are any group of wastelanders who pillage, plunder, murder, or otherwise ruin the day of anyone unfortunate enough to not be one of them. There are many gangs of Raiders in the Yukon Wasteland.
- Yeiltooch Pirates
- Ice Hounds
- Bear Brothers
- Snow Hawks
Carson's Gun Runners[]
The Yukon Wasteland's local gun merchants. This faction is disliked by many wastelanders for supplying weapons to Alaska's raider groups, although many still admit it is hard to argue with the quality of their goods. Their leader is Hank Carson.
Northwestern Caravan Company[]
Though there are many other caravans in the region, the Northwestern Caravan Co. is by far the largest and most profitable. Their headquarters are in the downtown Juneau.
Juneau Caravan Company[]
The second most largest caravan company in the Yukon, and the main competitors of the Northwestern Caravan Company.
New American Army[]
The New American Army are direct descendants of the U.S. military forces in Alaska. They can often be found working as mercenaries, although many believe they have a larger agenda. They occupy a few military bases in the Yukon Wasteland, including their headquarters at Fort Greely.
Cult of Char[]
One of the newer factions in Alaska, they are based in the central Yukon Wasteland. The Cult of Char believes that a god name "Char" caused the Great War to cleanse humanity for their sins, and believe he speaks to them. They participate in human sacrifice and other gruesome rituals.
Midnight Sun Rangers[]
Many years ago, raiders and other "villains" of the frozen wastes feared the white armor of the Midnight Sun Rangers. Now they are but a shadow of their former selves after years of bloody conflicts and decline. Still, the rangers are licking their wounds from a rumored headquarters hidden somewhere in the Yukon Wasteland. They hope to once again be the force of justice in Alaska, with a mere presence enough to scare raiders and other dangerous ne'er-do-well.
Chinese Remnants[]
Many believed that the "commies" of the old world had their asses kicked back across the Pacific Ocean. Many thought wrong. These ghoul and human remnants can still be found on the Alaska Peninsula, Aleutian Islands, and occasionally squabbling with New Anchorage scavengers for the salvage of the pre-War city.
Mercenaries[]
Merciless, greedy, violent. This describes your average freelance mercenary; but there are many other mercenary groups around the Yukon, including,
- Eagle Merc Co.
- Timber-Wolf Man-Hunting Crew
